Bilateral simultaneous hip replacements

Simultaneous bilateral hip replacements is the medical term used to describe performing hip replacements in both of your hip joints during a single surgery. Ordinarily, patients will have staged bilateral hip replacements such that they have the worst side performed first, and once they have recovered enough, a decision is made about timing regarding when to perform the other side. The interval between the two operations could range from patient to patient but a minimum of 3-months is often recommended.
Whilst there are advantages to performing two hip replacements in one sitting (one anaesthetic, one hospital stay, single rehabilitation following surgery), there are also additional risks. Having two operations under one anaesthetic is more stressful for your body and leads to greater blood loss, longer time under anaesthetic and greater risks of complications. It is generally accepted by the surgical community that bilateral simultaneous hip replacements are reserved for patients who are younger and with no significant medical illnesses (e.g. heart or lung conditions).
Mr Kosuge will consider performing simultaneous bilateral hip replacements in the appropriate setting and if his patient feels it is an option that is right for them after discussing the potential benefits, risks and side-effects of doing so:
